Color can be extremely helpful when determining emphasis in a visual text. Color doesn't have to mean red, orange, or blue—black and white are colors too. Visual emphasis can be accorded to how bold or large, or how much black compared to the white or gray background, is used.

Color

This painting uses colors in order to distinguish between background and foreground while also putting emphasis on certain objects. For example, the artist used warmer colors, such as yellow, to make the boats stand out more.

In this image the use of warm colors gives the overall image a very warm feeling. Without the oranges, reds and yellows the image would feel very cold and barren. There is also an emphasis on the sunset with the use of the brighter colors.
