Although element doesn't seem much more specific than thing, it is the placement and relation of the elements in a text that offers meaning for the whole. Elements are words, shapes, phrases and more.
Element
For this example there are multiple areas of text in various sizes and colors. Each of them contributing to the reader's understanding of what is in the magazine. Without these elements the reader would never know what the magazine was about. Other shapes, such as the pink circle, help guide the reader's eye to more important information.
In this image each vegetable is an element of its own which contributes to the image as a whole. Without each element working together you wouldn't be able to see the color blend and fade that is happening.
